Basement floor drain clearing in Edmonton

Water coming up through a basement floor drain is stressful. Here's what usually causes it and what to do.

Floor drain or main line?

A floor drain that's slow by itself can usually be cleared for $149. But if water comes up the floor drain when the washer drains, someone showers or a toilet is flushed, the blockage is usually in the main line past the floor drain. That needs main sewer line snaking ($249).

What to do right now

  • Stop running water upstairs, including the washer and dishwasher
  • Move boxes and anything valuable away from the drain
  • Take photos for your records
  • Skip chemical drain cleaners

Backwater valves

Many Edmonton homes have a backwater valve on the main line to keep sewer water from flowing back into the basement. It needs to stay accessible and clean to work properly. If you know where yours is, mention it in your email.

Sewer smell from a floor drain

A sewer smell with no backup often means the floor drain's trap has dried out. Pour a jug of water into the drain to refill the trap. If the smell stays, there may be a venting or line problem worth a look.
